Bonalu declared as Telangana State Festival by Telangana Government (TRS government) recently.
Bonalu is a Hindu Festival specially Telangana state festival, Goddess Mahakali (Yellamma) is worshipped. Bonalu is an annual festival celebrated in Twin Cities Hyderabad and Secunderabad (Lashkar) in Telangana state. It's celebrating in the month of Aashada Maasam as for English calendar its comes in July/August months.Bonalu, also known as Aashada Jatara is celebrated during Aashada Maasam nearly in 115 temples in the twin cities including Akkanna Madanna Temple, Peddamma Temple, Katta Maisamma, Gandi Maisamma and Balkampet Yellamma to name of few big temples through out the month.
Special poojas for Yellamma on the first and last day of the festival.The festivals also considered thanksgiving to goddess to fulfilment their vows.
Bonam means 'Bojanam' in Telugu, is offering for mother goddess. Women prepare rice cooked with Milk,Jaggery in a new brass or earthen pot garland with Neem leaves, Turmeric, Vermilion and Lighted Diya (Deeph) on the top of the pot. Women carry the pots on their heads and make offering of Bonam along with Turmeric, Vermilion,Bangles and Saree to the mother goddess across the temples throughout twin cities.
Telangana Bonalu Festival included Pothuraju dance, Rangam and Ghatam which is very important in this bonalu.
Recently Telangana Tourism Development Corporation has launched Bonalu weekend package tours on June 29, July 13 and July 20.
